Read with KU subscription.I read this book only because I wanted to see how the authors saved the end of the first book. The end of the first book has the MMC, Nicolo, leaving the FMC, Celia, in a room after he auctioned her off as a virgin. No qualms, no hesitation, not even internally, just walked out on her. I suspected he would either suddenly realize he made a mistake or it was a psyche he was pulling on her family, who knows. I won’t spoil it totally, but it was one of those two. Either would be a disingenuous resolution given his cavalier attitude toward her in that book and when he leaves her in the room.The second book is a long and tedious 180 turnaround where he suddenly cannot live without her. It’s 2+ hours of him claiming to be unable to live without her and punishing her when she gets too sassy. She does give him a little attitude about being sold at the auction, but it’s kind of casual. I’d be practically catatonic if someone had just sold me in an auction, but she rallies and obviously cannot reject his advances because of how hot he is.There is a scene that takes place at a park, where he inexplicably asks her about her childhood and the reader suddenly knows something that hasn’t been hinted about, and only gets a small mention later at the climax of the story. Hello, authors, ever hear of foreshadowing? Bizarre. After reading it in this book, however, it makes his wanting to hurt Celia all through the first book even more puzzling.I don’t know if it is the influence of one author, C Hallman, over the other author, JL Beck, but I seem to recall enjoying Beck’s books much more than the more recent ones. I’m not a fan of a man using a belt on a woman and being told the woman likes it. If this were a BDSM story, I wouldn’t like it but I’d consider it credible, but this is just really about a guy who wants to “punish“ a woman when she doesn’t submit in or out of the bedroom.Sex scenes were okay, but nothing you couldn’t get in a better story. Not sure I will waste the time on future books by this author pair. Read with KU. I feel like I can't really accurately describe why I'm giving this book such a low rating without massive spoilers.Without giving too much away, the best way I can put it is that this book is WAY too much like the 1st. The relationship dynamics between Nic and Celia is pretty much the same, and that's really the problem. In the 1st book, their relationship dynamic makes sense. In this book, it's just exhausting. I didn't expect either character to do a complete 180 from the 1st book, but I expected more progress than what was made. Celia for her part, kinda does do a 180, and it's almost infuriating. I didn't expect her to magically become a totally different person from the 1st book (that would have been just as irritating). But, I also didn't expect her to just lay down for Nic - both literally and figuratively - so easily after everything he did in the last book. For Nic's part, all his declarations of not being able to live without her do very little to change the way he treats her. He continues to bully and threaten her almost all the way through the book. Again, I didn't expect a complete 180, but his change in his treatment of Celia is minimal at best. And the "reveal" at the end makes it all the worse. I think you're supposed to feel something akin to warmth at what was revealed in the end. But honestly, it just makes Nic come off even more cruel than he already did.I feel like I've said this a lot in reviewing dark romances. But, I suppose it bares repeating. I actually love this sub genre of romance. I don't have a problem with anti-hero heroes, dub-con, or any number of common tropes associated with dark romance. My problem is when they aren't done well. In this 1st book, I think the authors did a pretty good job of setting up something interesting. But here, they really dropped the ball. From beginning to end, this book just frustrated me. Also, Lucas' story line just became a total afterthought. Which is really a shame, because his story really should habe developed into something so much more interesting. Overall, this book was a real letdown for me. Largely because the set up was there for it to be so much better than it ended up being. I suppose if you read the 1st book, then it's worth it to see how the story ends. However, I would really manage my expectations going into this one.
