Just finished "Alex" by William di Canzio. I don't remember when I first read E.M. Forster's "Maurice," or saw the film, but I loved the story. Which was not published until after his death in 1971. The book was suspect for three reasons, the gay love story, a love story between two members of different classes, and it had a happy ending. "Alex" begins where Forster began and basically follows the plot line, with variations, up to the ending of the book where the lovers are together in a boat house. I felt the writing somewhat perfunctory up to that point. Then, it turned lyrical for the remainder of the book. Hard to describe the WWI war experiences of both as lyrical, but it was excellent at conveying the horrors of one of stupidest wars in history. The reunion of Alex and Maurice again was nothing short of beautiful. I won't go further, but this book did have a happy ending. William di Canzio's resurrection of the romance between two English chaps, Alec and Maurice [captured in E. M. Forster's Maurice originally completed in 1914 (published after his death in 1971)] held me captive (in his release of "Alec") for the first 16 chapters. Starting with chapter 17 through 30 di Canzio decided to veer from Alec's closing statement to Maurice in chapter 10 . . .“And now we shan’t be parted no more, and that’s finished.”Why di Canzio decided to physically part Alec and Maurice for 1/2 of what started out to be a promising, positive relationship between to men in love is unclear. Why he decided to recount WWI life for 1/2 of his work? Unclear. Libraries contain a plethora of war-torn works meticulously mucking about the pain and suffering of separated lives. Libraries lack work featuring two strong gents who navigate an enduring life physically together.Had di Canzio applied his beautiful skills to create a fictional story where Alex and Maurice crafted a life - physically together - sharing a robust, fulfilling life by say - maybe - emigrating together to another country where two men openly sharing a life together? Had Canzio opted to sustain the "shan't be parted no more . . ." motif through the entire book? 5 stars.3 stars for a solid start (first 16 chapters); WWI detour (chapters 17 - 30); creative reunion conclusion.
